I view the month of September as my second chance each year to truly make life changes. I love when Summer rolls into Fall and the schools start up again, the leaves change color and there’s a crispness to the air. For me, it’s my personal signal to get myself in gear and make some changes. Sure, we all start the year with lofty goals and New Year’s Resolutions, but, mine rarely stick. I always say, “my intentions are great, it’s my execution that’s lacking.” For me, it’s always been September that brings on the need to change, grow, and better myself. It’s probably the physical changing of the leaves that psychologically gets to me, but, whatever it is, September seems to urge me on to better things.
Since I started blogging I have been researching various ways to become more money-savvy and household efficient. I have taken baby steps towards that end but have not yet committed to a set plan. It’s time I dropped the hammer! (Is that the right saying?) I need to make managing our household and our finances a priority. While I have made some strides in that general direction, there’s still lots of room for improvement.
One of the budgeting moves we made early on in moving into our new house was to eliminate our cleaning service. The house is much smaller so surely we can handle the upkeep, right? The truth is, we could if we had a plan but there’s currently no plan in place. Hence, you could most likely write “clean me” with your finger in the dust on our tv stand right now. This really grosses me out! I intend to implement a system that we can follow that will keep the house clean if we all pitch in and do our parts. I am praying my husband and son will be on-board. (Erin gets a temporary pass since she’s at school.) This one really needs to be a group effort in order to be successful.
For the past six weeks or so I have been trolling the internet looking for blogs that discuss budgeting, grocery savings, and couponing. Holy moly, there are so many of them! I have spent hours reading through them and must say there’s a lot of inspiration out there and many folks with success stories that will make you want to follow in their footsteps. Some of the advice is very basic but sometimes you need to hear the same thing again and again until it sinks in and you take action.
Clearly, the most consistent advice I read during my beginner budgeting research was to start by trimming your food budget. I have decided to take action! I am going to Aldi, the grocery store so many budget-conscious bloggers recommend (I found one twenty minutes from my house). Armed with my grocery list, my meal-planning list and a budget of $100 I am determined to make this work. I scoped this place out once before and tried a couple of their products. Surprisingly, I liked all of their house brands. This will be my first attempt at doing our full grocery shop there. I have high hopes this is going to go well!
I also need to make a run to CVS to re-stock our toiletry items. I will be armed with a list and my 35% off my entire purchase store coupon in addition to various other coupons for individual items. If I can miraculously keep the CVS budget under $75.00 I will be ecstatic! This will be a tough one but I’ll never get there if I don’t try, right?
I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Summer! I am excited and ready to welcome September with my new goals and look forward to reporting back on my successes!

When it comes to keeping your own house clean my trick is not to pick one day as “cleaning day”. When you do that, it becomes overwhelming. That’s fine for housekeepers who love to clean but for most of us, it doesn’t work. The prospect of spending the entire day cleaning is depressing. I have found that if you break it up it’s easier and more likely to get done. Example, Monday’s dust and vacuum, Wednesday wash floors, Saturdays clean bathrooms. Of course everyone should be making their bed every day! And consistently wiping down makes the bigger jobs easier when it’s time for the full clean

Such great advice Cathy! You, obviously, have a plan which is exactly what I am working on right now. I am breaking out the chores also so that we do not have one full day of cleaning.

In our household, my wife and split the work. She cooks and I wash/clean-up the kitchen; she does the wash and I iron; she dusts and vacuums and I clean the bathrooms. We both make the bed together everyday as well as change the sheets together every Friday. The bigger seasonal chores we together like cleaning windows, flipping mattresses, etc. We also have set days for doing the chores this way my wife has time during the day to do what she wants. (We’ve been doing this way for 35 years — even when I was working.) As far as savings, my wife is great at managing our household finances. Even though its just the two of us now, she still buys some bulk stuff at Costco. ShopRite by us has the best prices for food and other items with their Plus Card — even cheaper than CVS or Walgreens. At the end of the day, it is all about the savings so we can enjoy the little things together.
I look forward to your next blog Loretta!

Wow, you and Pat have it going on! I will use you guys as our inspiration. It is all about the savings so you can do the things you want to do. I’m on it and will share our progress along the way. Thanks for reading the blog!

I want to know how your shopping trip turned out haha! My husband is a teacher so September is always a big adjustment for us. We have two little boys and get all summer together and then having him away at work everyday plus coaching afterwards is really hard for the toddler and for us. It helps us to be better about how we spend our time though which is good.

Hi Brittany. Sounds like September is a family adjustment month for you. They won’t be toddlers forever so enjoy your time with them while you can, before you know it they’ll be going to school in September like your husband. You can read about my shopping trip here: https://www.outwittinglife.com/big-win-at-the-grocery-store/. The title kinda gives it away, lol. Thanks for commenting!

I never really thought of September being a month for change but, yes, I have seen some changes in my life which started in September. I started my blog last September.

Thanks for the comment Alice and happy anniversary! Are you enjoying blogging?

September can be a month for change for me but for different reasons to you. In Australia it is the beginning of Spring and so new life calls for change! Have you thought about saving money by making your own toiletries and doing your body a favour at the same time? I make all my own cleaning products – saves money, fewer nasty chemicals in my house and a feeling of more control over my health!
Loretta | 16th Sep 19
No, I have never tried making toiletries or cleaning products. That sounds very ambitious of you! Is it hard to do?

I think it’s the new school year that makes us feel like September is a fresh start. I’ve always felt that way! And I am focused on the same as you – getting the budget in control! It’s hard to do! Thank you for an interesting read.

Hi Lori, thanks for taking the time to read my post and comment. Best of luck getting your budget under control!
