DIY Fun with Candlesticks

I don’t know what it is about rainy days but they always make me want to create something. Today was the perfect day! I had posted a few weeks ago that I had scored a terrific buy at Hobby Lobby on two wooden candlesticks. They were originally priced at $27.99 a piece. I found them on the clearance rack marked $2.99 each. Woo-hoo!

Our current home decor is a mix of grays, whites and blues so I opted to paint the candlesticks white. I know what you are thinking…boring! Just humor me, I think you’ll like the end result.

I used chalk paint that I purchased from A.C. Moore. Yes, it was on sale and, of course I used my 40% off coupon. I paid $6.00 for the paint and didn’t even use one quarter of the jar. I am sure I will have another project I will be able to use it on at a later (rainy) date!

Now that I have my generic candlesticks, the sky’s the limit on how I use them. Right now, I have them sitting pretty as my dining table centerpiece. I bought a yellow and white swag (A.C. Moore $2.99) that I cut in two and swirled around the top of the candlesticks. In keeping with our decor, I purchased two gray candles from Target ($23 for both). I purposely bought two different heights as I like the depth it gives on the Lazy Suzan. You could certainly get the same height candles if you like things more uniform. Below is how I will be displaying them until September.

Once Fall kicks in, I will be perching them on my buffet table with different candles that I also purchased from Target ($11/both). I went with two different sizes again. I guess I’m a rebel and just don’t want to cave to uniformity! I absolutely love the galvanized steel tray I am using for my Fall display. It was a house warming gift from a dear friend – a Kevinite for those of you that have been following my blog. Doesn’t it look lovely?

The Fall leaves that I wrapped around the candlesticks are a swag from the Dollar Store (gotta love that place), the thankful platter was a Pier 1 find on clearance that cost me $9.99 but was originally $29 and the pretty hello fall pumpkin was another house warming gift from family. I already had the Longaberger basket and the cute Halloween kitchen towel. As I am sure you have figured out by now, my intent is to change the look of the candlesticks for all seasons. By keeping them white, I can jazz them up with red and green for Christmas, silver for the winter months, red for Valentine’s Day, Green for St. Paddy’s, etc. I’m thinking you get the picture. Can you tell I’ve thought about this?

As a side note, the picture at the top of this post of the Sunflowers in the mason jar are also a DIY. They are an exact replica of real Sunflowers my daughter sent me when I lost my job last February. She was away at college and wanted to cheer me up. I was so touched by this gesture that I kept the jar and bought the silk Sunflowers and duplicated the arrangement. It always brings a smile to my face.

What did you DIY on this rainy day?
