Aspiring Gardener

We purchased our home this past winter so we had no idea what type of flowers the previous owners had planted or what our landscaping was going to look like come Spring. We decided it would make more sense to wait and see what we had before we did our own landscaping. We were pleased with the different types and sizes of bushes in various shades sitting pretty in the front of the house. But, we were curious to see what flowers might make their appearance.

A couple of daffodils popped up in early spring but I was remiss in getting pictures of them. I did, however get some nice before and after pictures of the brilliant fiery orange lilies.

I will definitely look forward to seeing these lilies again next year. My only complaint is that they bloom for such a short period of time. Don’t you agree they are just gorgeous? I wish I could take credit for them! Do you have stunning flowers blooming on your property?

It appears that the lilies are it in terms of flowers in the front yard. We did have two beautiful hanging plants (house-warming gift from my sister) that brought some color to the front–until we went away for four days and they took a serious hit. There’s still a tiny bit of green in both of them so I am continuing to water them, chat with them and beg them to grow again. Not convinced they can be revived as they are looking quite sad, don’t you think?

Is it time to take them down or should I keep trying? You be the judge! Are there any particular flowers that bloom later in the summer that we might be able to get going? I am open to suggestions.

As you can plainly see, I am not a gardener. I hate the dirt and the earwigs and other “creatures” that live in it. I know a lot of people say that gardening is soothing to them and a big stress reliever. I somehow missed that gene! I am attempting to keep some potted plants alive on my deck in the backyard this year. It’s been a challenge so far but I am still working on it. My intent was to post a picture of them with this post assuming that by this late in the summer they would be looking marvelous. Turns out, that was wishful thinking. I do not have a green thumb. The back deck beauties are not terrible, however, they are far from what I would call “thriving.” I am trying, I swear! If, I can turn them around before the end of the Summer, I will post a picture of them.

As a side note, my husband finds it comical that I wear gardening gloves when using potting soil. Anyone else out there guilty of that? What’s that old song, “I never promised you a rose garden…”? Not sure that I will ever figure out how to Outwit gardening. I am still trying though – also, I heard they call them hearty Mums for a reason. Maybe Fall will be my season?

I am always complaining about my nails….my garden is my happy place and I work hard to maintain it. I need to wear gloves because my hands would look as great as the garden. Wear gloves and avoid the bugs!

Hi Loretta! I love the looks of the new house and your landscaping looks pretty. Don’t worry about those petunias, they get like that late in the season anyway. I had gorgeous flowers in my front gardens and deck, and a lovely green lawn. Went to London for over a week and came back to dried everything! The flowers have rallied but are not fabulous. Fall mums, here we come! Xo

Hi Loretta. I love reading your blogs. Try adding a baby aspirin or two to the plants. Works like a charm on our plants.

I’m not much of a gardener but I do like my (very easy to grow) herb garden which happens to grow back each year on its own. Be careful with mint, however, as it can (and, will!) take over everything. I like container gardening – that’s where I have my tomatoes, lettuce and peppers. Lavender is beautiful and will also come back year after year.
